CSN is a service that helps students in Sweden apply for financial aid and manage their student loans. The goal of this UX redesign project was to improve the usability and user experience of their App, making it easier for students to apply for aid, check their loan status, and access important information.
This project was conducted in Swedish to best serve the needs of the primary audience for CSN, which is based in Sweden.

CSN (Centrala studiestödsnämnden) is a Swedish government agency responsible for handling student financial aid and loans. The agency provides financial support to Swedish students who are pursuing higher education in Sweden or abroad. CSN has a website and mobile app that allows students to apply for financial aid and loans, check their status, and manage their payments.


However, the existing CSN app has received criticism for its confusing user interface, lack of functionality, and technical issues. As a result, many students have reported frustration and difficulties in using the app, which can have significant consequences for their education and financial well-being.

In the CSN project, my role was to create and refine their mobile app. This involved conducting user research to understand current perceptions, crafting UX-flows for improved navigation, and designing a new interface.
By synthesizing user insights and strategic design, I created the development of a revamped app that better serves CSN's user base.

CSN serves a diverse user base relying on its products daily, from facilitating new student loan applications to providing insights into debt statuses and payment plans. However, an outdated mobile app has resulted in decreased user engagement, with many opting for the website instead.


With an growing number of users turning to mobile solutions for convenience and accessibility, an updated mobile app is crucial for enhancing user experience and ensuring continued engagement.

An updated mobile app is crucial for enhancing user experience and ensuring continued engagement. By modernizing the app interface, incorporating new features, and optimizing performance, CSN can reinvigorate user interest and encourage regular usage.


Investing in the mobile app's improvement aligns with CSN's commitment to providing seamless access to essential services, ultimately help users to manage their student finances efficiently and effectively.

Understanding The User

CSN's primary target audience is students between the ages of 19-60. However, if the target audience were to be narrowed down, the focus would primarily be on the 19-30 age group, since the majority of students fall within that age range.


Additionally, it's important to consider that younger generations tend to use mobile apps more frequently than websites, while the older generation is more likely to use websites. ​​​​​​​

CSN's primary target audience is students between the ages of 19-60. However, if the target audience were to be narrowed down, the focus would primarily be on the 19-30 age group, since the majority of students fall within that age range.


Additionally, it's important to consider that younger generations tend to use mobile apps more frequently than websites, while the older generation is more likely to use websites. ​​​​​​​

Interviews

I Interviewed Five individuals regarding their experiences with CSN's app and website. All participants had the same opinion that CSN's app was outdated and had the feeling it hadn't been updated for over 20 years, making it unappealing to use.


As a result, none of the participants had used the app within the past month and the majority preferred to use CSN's website instead, which they found to be more modern and user-friendly.​​​​​​​

Define

Based on the research, I found that CSN users require convenient access to their loan and payment details, as they prefer to stay updated and informed about their financial status.


To address this need, I gave priority to developing features that offer easy and quick accessibility to the required information, ensuring a hassle-free and informed experience for the users.

From the insights of my User research and mapping of the most
important features, I formed the user flow and User Interface for the app.


I created several Low and High-fidelity wireframes/prototypes of the product designs.

Validation

Using high-fidelity designs, I developed a clickable prototype and conducted user testing with 7 users.
All users successfully completed the tasks, and expressed happiness about the design.

Testing also revealed areas for improvement, informing for future adjustments to enhance user experience. This iterative process helped my commitment to improve current design through thorough testing and refinement.

Challenges

One of the primary challenges I faced in this project was realizing the difficulty of doing a UX project alone. To cover all aspects of the process, discuss new ideas and see new perspectives.


With my goal which was not only to create a successful project, but also to improve my own skills and knowledge in UX design, I still believe it was a good experience of doing a project alone.
